Prioritization is a strategy used to decide what products, features, or initiatives should be worked on first based on their importance.

My preferred framework is the R.I.C.E framework because it aims at reducing biases by focusing on reach, measuring confidence and seeking data and validation in prioritization.

It also helps to synthesize, filter and organize information in a way that is easily consumable for the audience.

Sean McBride co-developed the RICE framework while working as a product manager at Intercom.

R. I. C. E

REACH:

IMPACT:

How much will this impact each user as it relates to our chosen goal?

Low impact features are still retained because the need of users/market constantly changes,so a low impact feature might one day become a high impact feature.

CONFIDENCE:

How confident am I in the reach, impact, and effort estimates?

Confidence level should be based on customer research data and should be void of personal or team bias.

EFFORT:

This is how long it’ll take to implement a feature. It can be measured using TShirt sizing.

The higher the effort the lower the confidence level

Features with high effort will have a low rice score except they have a high impact to boost the score or balance the effort.

RICE SCORE

Using an assumption of 3 features needed for an e-commerce website:

The higher the rice score the higher the priority

Therefore the features to be built in order of priority are.

Feature 2 then

Feature 1 finally

Feature 3
